I used to joke that if you threw a stick in Central London you would hit an employment lawyer. We are everywhere. How then do you make the decision about which lawyer is right for you when you have an issue at work?
Choose a specialist
If you are dealing with a discrimination issue use an expert. Avoid using a generalist employment lawyer or a high street lawyer. With the greatest of respect, they will simply not have enough knowledge or experience to give you the best possible service or to be able to assess the merits and risks of your case. Discrimination law is the sharp end of employment law and you need a real expert.
Choose the person
Itâs as important when choosing a lawyer to choose the right person as well as the person who has the best legal skills for the job. At a time when things might be quite stressful there is little point hiring someone who is not on the same wavelength as you. Does the person you are talking to put you at ease? Are they explaining your options in plain English? Do you feel like this is someone you could talk to when you are feeling tearful and upset? It is really important to pick a lawyer who is the right fit for you. If you call a firm and you like the firm but donât warm to the lawyer they have set you up with, ask to speak to another lawyer. You need to be comfortable with the process and this means feeling at ease as much as possible. Make sure you are dealing with someone who âgetsâ you.
Read the reviews
Check the law firm and lawyersâ reviews either on their website and other review websites. Seeing the comments from previous clients will always be a good indicator as to whether you are on the right track.
Does the firm offer a free initial call?
You should be able to try the firm and the lawyer for size before you commit to buying their services. At didlaw we have always offered a free initial 20-minute consultation to prospective clients. If we know we cannot help you either because of the type of case you have or because we cannot take it on then you will get a call from our Business team to explain this. If you have something we can help with we will set you up with a call with one of our Legal team. We cannot give legal advice on this call (for insurance reasons) but we can give you a steer on what options are available to you and what the road ahead might look like. We will also be totally up front and transparent about costs.
What really makes didlaw stand out
Every person at didlaw whether on the Business team which makes the wheels go round or the Legal team which delivers the legal advice is solidly grounded in the firmâs values. It is hugely important to me that every client gets the same service from every single didlaw person. #
Just a few of the things we ensure will happen when you are our client include:
- We are responsive. You will never have to chase.
- We are reactive. If you contact us in distress, we will get back to you as soon as possible.
- We aim to answer all emails on the same day they are received and if we canât a member of the Business team will get back to you.Â
- We send you a line by line breakdown of our costs so you can see how you are spending your money. If you want to put limit alerts, we can do this. If you want to know how you can reduce costs, we will address this. We know that you are paying from your own pocket and that money is a primary concern.Â
- We donât get complaints but any time anything is not quite right you need only tell us and we will put it right. Straight away. We are working for you.Â
- Every aspect of our service is carried out with consideration about how it will work for you. Even our new client documents which our regulator the SRA dictates must contain certain information are designed to make them digestible and understandable.Â
- We use tech where we can to lighten your load but you will never lose the personal touch that is integral to our service.Â
You can read more about our values on our website here.
Our website contains many testimonials but here is a selection of the most recent ones which tell you everything you need to know about how we work.
âĤreally impressed with the set-up of your firm – I can tell a lot of genuine thought has gone in to seeking to help individuals overcome the many barriers to them bringing claims against employers (especially the client care at the outset, the way the documents are drafted, the option to pay by credit card, the transparent breakdown of what documents are necessary with reference to the attendant costs). A lot of firms say their clients are central but …
I’ve felt in very safe, compassionate and astute hands throughout. Thank you for seeing and clearly understanding the unscrupulous machine I’ve been up against.
A huge thank you for all of your help and support through the process. Itâs been great to work with you. You made the process very smooth and easy to navigate – much appreciated and a fantastic outcome!
As Iâve said before, people like you truly make this world a better place. I will never forget your kindness in an extremely difficult and confronting time for me. I am very grateful.
I really appreciated everything. I just want to thank you for everything. This has been the most stressful time but I have never doubted for a second I was in really safe hands with you.
A personal touch and empathy associated with the situation. Highly professional settlement resolution, combined with a human touch that was welcome during a challenging phase for me.
